When I got married in 1957, I received as a gift a cook book named "The New Settlement Cook Book" . This is one of many recipes that I love that come from this book.
OATMEAL COOKIES
- 1 Cup butter
- 1 Cup sugar
- 2 Cups flour
- 2 Cups oatmeal
- 1/4 Cup milk
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 Cup chopped raisins or dates
- 1 Cup chopped walnuts
Cream butter and sugar, add eggs; mix the dry ingredients, sprinkle over the raisins and nuts and combine the mixtures, adding milk. Drop on a buttered tin,1 inch apart. Bake in moderately hot over, 350 F for 15 minutes.
Since I live in the mountains, I have my oven at 375 F and bake for about 12 minutes. I have also often made these cookies using my food storage items of dried eggs, dried milk and powdered shortening. They were delicious! I throw the raisins in whole and I like the old fashioned oats. Sometimes I leave out the raisins and cinnamon and add some baking cocoa and chocolate chips. Mmmmmm!!!
